The DCP understands that this abrupt shift from in-person to online accommodations is new to most people and can be challenging. We are working tirelessly to help provide thorough information to ensure that everyone has as seamless a transition as possible. Below are help files we are developing to guide the UCLA community about these online accommodations for disabled students.

About Accommodations

What is an accommodation?
An accommodation is a legally mandated modification or service designed to mitigate the functional limitations associated with a student's disability. Accommodations can be:
-Changes to a classroom environment or task that permit a student with a disability to participate in the educational process,
-Reasonable modifications to policies, practices or procedures, etc.
Reasonable accommodations are determined through an interactive process between the CAE, the student, and instructional staff. The student’s accommodation request must be linked to the functional limitations described in the medical documentation.
What types of accommodations are often considered “unreasonable”?
- Accommodations that would fundamentally alter the nature of a program.
- Accommodations which lower or substantially modify academic or program standards.
- Accommodations that would impose undue financial or administrative burden.
- Accommodations that would pose an appreciable threat to personal or public safety.
How do I notify my professors about my accommodations?
- At the beginning of each quarter, students are expected to initiate a letter of accommodations request in the Student Portal.
- Students must inform their professors that their letter of accommodation is available for viewing in the Faculty Portal.
- The letter will notify your instructor of your approved accommodations.

Adjusted (Extended) Time for CCLE Quizzes

Early Notification of Large Assignments

Alternative Formats
We highly encourage faculty/lecturers to ensure that all digital text-based content (ie PDFs) are created accessibly. If you want a quick intro to PDF accessibility, please see our PDF Accessibility Tutorial.
The DCP can offer guidance in using assistive technology like screen readers and ZoomText in lieu of large print materials.
Braille will be quite difficult given the nature of the current campus shut down. For inquiries about this accommodation, please contact the CAE directly.

In lieu of in-person notetakers, UCLA will provide high-quality transcripts for all uploaded videos to CCLE.

Proctoring
Considering the fundamental shift of in-person proctoring to online proctoring, these accommodations will be handled on a case-by-case basis. For this accommodation, please contact the CAE directly.
Real-Time Captioning
This accommodation will shift from an in-person stenographer to a live captioner in Zoom sessions. This wilI need to be arranged ahead of time with both the faculty/lecturer and the CAE. See the following help file for step-by-step instructions and video tutorials.
